Dan Parry-Jones paintings combine layers of paint and elements of typography, collage and screen prints, the process giving his work an urban art feel while keeping hold of something particular; a unique landscape that can be found along the south west coast of England. These are paintings that scream colour and texture, his compositions lying somewhere between the innocence play of childhood and the gritty industrial reality of adulthood.

Originally a illustrator and graphic designer Parry-Jones has used his formal training to inform his work, his impasto technique a wonderful counterfoil to his more ordered and controlled graphic sensibilities. Here’s what he has to say about his work:

Dan’s paintings are all mixed media. The process involves working on wood and building up layer upon layer of acrylic paint usually with a palette knife. Dan’s background in graphics has inspired in him a love of typography; he often works collage into the paintings with glimpses of signs, letters etc incorporated. As the work progresses, Dan scrapes off or paints over large areas in order to preserve or emphasise the most important part of the image. Finally, Dan uses silk screen printing when adding detail such as the figures or buildings. He applies a top layer of varnish to fix any loose flakes of paint or paper in place and also to age the piece. This creates a contrast with the generally contemporary feel of the work.
